In a thrilling and dramatic Champions League quarterfinal second leg, Real Madrid upset defending champions Manchester City 4-3 on penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals.
After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Manchester, the two sides played to another 1-1 stalemate in the return leg at the Etihad Stadium.
With the aggregate score tied 4-4, the match went to a penalty shootout. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Riyad Mahrez's penalty to give Madrid the edge.
Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos, Rodrygo, and Luka Modric all converted their penalties for Real Madrid, while Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, and Riyad Mahrez scored for Manchester City.
The victory is a major upset for Manchester City, who were heavily favored to advance.
Real Madrid will now face either Chelsea or Barcelona in the semifinals.
